Rabies
Apr 30th
Rabies is a dreadful disease transmitted to the humans by the bite of animals especially dogs which are infected by rabies virus. In some situations rabies can be transmitted even by the bite of other animals like cats, monkeys, foxes, jackals, wolves and mongoose. The saliva of the animal is the main source of rabies infection.
Rabies can be transmitted by the contact with the injured skin. The rabies virus takes nearly 10 days to more than one year as its incubation period. The prevention for the affect of rabies is Pasteur vaccine which is administered in the form of 14 injections in the stomach or human diploid cell vaccine in the form of five injections in the thighs or hands.
Some of the symptoms of rabies are severe headache, fever with alternating stages of excitement and depression and a severe muscular spasm in the throat and chest. The dogs which cause rabies are mainly of two types the furious and the dumb one. The furious bites people without any provocation and begins to eat non eatables like mud and stick. Whereas the dumb selects a lonely site and remains in a state of sleep and dies.
We must be careful with these two types of dogs in order to be safe from rabies.
Chicken-Pox
Apr 26th
Generally chicken-pox is an infectious disease caused by a virus called varicella zoster. This disease generally occurs in children under the age group of 10 years. This disease is mainly transmitted from one person to another by direct contact with clothing or other objects soiled with discharges from an infected person. The most suitable period for the spreading of the disease is about two days before the appearance of rashes and up to fourteen days afterwards. The first attack of this disease generally provides a permanent immunity to the disease.
Some of the general symptoms are mild fever, pain in the chest, shivering and malaise. The severity of the disease depends upon the number of eruptions produced. In some severe cases, almost the whole body may be covered with rashes. The preventive measures against this disease is mainly avoiding contact with an infected patient.
Vaccination is given to prevent this disease. Perhaps the effect of this disease is mild and very low mortality rate. Specially prepared lotions or coconut oil can be applied on the rashes for getting some relief. The patient, his clothing and his bed must be kept clean and away from the contact with other persons especially children.
Polio
Apr 22nd
The disease polio or polymyelitis is known from ancient times. It is mainly caused by one of the smallest known virus called polio virus. It generally enters the body through food or water and ultimately reaches the central nervous system through lymphatic system and blood stream. Polio is a kind of paralysis disease. The effect of the paralysis is more on the limbs especially on the legs. Mostly children between the age group of six months and three years are prone to polio infection. The mild infection in the early life of a person may develop immunity in the adult. Some of the ways in which the polio is transmitted among children is by faeco-oral route, through direct contact, dirty hands, contaminated food or milk and flies.
The symptoms in mild cases of polio may last for few days. But in severe paralytic type cases the fever is sustained for a longer time along with headache, vomiting. And convulsions followed by paralysis of limbs. Generally polio is diagnosed in a child by fever accompanied by restlessness, followed by stiffness of the neck and drowsiness.
Isolation of the diseased, immunization and improvement in sanitation are some methods for the control and prevention of polio. Nowadays the ORAL POLIO VACCINE(ORL) is given orally to children as per the National Immunisation Schedule in our country.
Cholera
Apr 18th
Cholera is an epidemic disease and also it is highly infectious. It mostly affects the gastro-intestinal tract, which comprises organs like stomach and intestines. It has been persisted for thousands of years and breaks out generally in overcrowded places. This disease affects people of all age groups. The cholera disease is caused by Vibrio cholerae bacterium. One a normal person consumes food or water contaminated by the cholera-causing bacterium then it begins to multiply inside the body. Also the bacteria begins to interfere with the normal functioning of the body.
Some of the symptoms of cholera are vomiting, acute diarrhea and muscular cramps. The patient suffering from cholera may pass stools 30-40 times a day. Those stools appears like rice-water. This excessive loss of water results in dehydration in the body accompanied by fever. If this state of dehydration continues it could be fatal. In order to avoid the dehydration, Oral Rehydration Solution(ORS) should be given to the patient at regular intervals.
Some of the preventive measures are consumption of properly cooked food, use of boiled drinking water, a proper system for the disposal of human wastes. Also the number of people in contact with a cholera patient should be restricted. Improved sanitary conditions help in controlling the spread of this highly infectious disease.
Nowadays a vaccine is administered to protect against the disease cholera. This immunization with cholera vaccine remains effective for six months.
Advertisements Or Advantage
Apr 14th
“Nothing is Impossible” is a motivational statement. But this has become the secret mantra for success
in the present day ad industry. There have been a lot of ads for promoting a wide variety of products
Ranging from soaps to expensive automobiles which expects a “Throw your common sense away and
watch” kind of attitude from the receiving end. It is a practical reality that there are people who get
carried away by such ads and suffer later thereby making these ads achieve their purpose. Gone are the days when ads were in-between shows but the present day scenario has just turned the vice-versa!!
On the flipside of it, this vast growing sector has been a treasure house of jobs for those people gifted with a lot of creativity. The latest “ZOO ZOO” series and Airtel’s ads based on relationships and connecting people has taken the industry by a storm. The cut throat competition and “ad- rivalry” kind of atmosphere has become an advantage for the consumers to compare and choose the better than the best. However zooming out at large there are two kinds of sub classifications one who earn the benefits
and the one who suffer and it is quite sad to see that the former has grown stronger over the latter which makes the sufferings to get dissipated among the benefits. At extreme cases, even loss of life has been reported due to a minor mistake in the choice of products!
So, a lot of awareness programs have to be created about the consumer rights. The phrase” think twice before you decide…..” has to be kept in mind as once lost is lost forever. However it would not be wrong to conclude that whatever consumer-friendly changes comes sufferings will continue unless the
consumer community makes use of their common sense and their “uncommon“ sense as well ! !
Inspiring nation developing (india): the emerging superpower
Apr 10th
Over the past few years there have been enough reports hitting the headlines which prove that India is on the right path in emerging as a superpower. Be it a Nobel Prize in science or the top rank that our cricket team has acquired (in test cricket); all news of achievement in various fields seems to be a sign of positive transformation of the country. It’s proud that this country has developed to the extent of hosting a prestigious
International sports meet- The Commonwealth Games! The achievements beyond the boundary like gold medals in the Olympic Games and even in IPhO (International Physics Olympiad) and the top position in the survey conducted by an international body on the percentage growth of young entrepreneurs the country is going towards becoming the superpower – the vision of former president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. We often
forget to appreciate the efforts behind it. The FIVE YEAR PLAN launched by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru is one such effort which is finding its purpose as India is one of the leading producer of wheat (Green Revolution)
and even best brains in technology (establishment of IITs).
But we cannot blindly say this as a Utopian nation, there is still a need to abolish many social evils like poverty, illiteracy, caste-system and even regional differences which are quite evident from the recent Telangana issue. So, the need of the hour is to put our hands together to reduce the negative traits of this nation thereby increasing the rate towards achieving the “SUPER POWER-2020” goal!
Rude Aggression In Groups (Ragging): Bringing Fear In The Name Of Fun
Apr 6th
Ragging is any misconduct which has the effect of teasing or handling any student with rudeness which in turn can cause annoyance, harm or can raise fear in a junior (student) affecting his mental health.
A report provided by an Indian anti-ragging activist group Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education (CURE) analyzed 64 ragging cases and found that over 60% of these were physical ragging, and 20% were sexual in nature. This provides a solid proof that ragging which is usually practiced by seniors just
for fun end up instilling fear in the minds of those being ragged.
Slowly over the past few decades this has become a part of the culture of the college culture. Ragging can be classified into many levels. It ranges from doing it just for the sake of doing it or purely for fun to seniors taking revenge over the juniors usually for quite silly reasons. Some of the common conventions of funny ragging are asking juniors to swim on land, dance, sing or even to ask a lift to an aeroplane flying overhead. These are completely harmless and are meant to be taken in a lighter vein.
But the extreme kind of it is dangerous where seniors go to the juniors’ hostel rooms and torture them physically by beating them to bruises. Sometimes when things go beyond a limit seniors turn oppressors which can even result in a junior being killed.
So, it is the duty of college institutions to take severe steps to prevent this sort of havoc to students.
Seniors on the other hands must never resort to such practices and at the most should stop with the funny part of it. Even slight changes in the present day education system like introducing value education and teaching students to handle situations can make wonders in stopping this evil.
